Reading / Language Arts
The third grade reading program is phonics based. Students read in both small and large setting, developing comprehension, vocabulary and skills developed through a variety of activities. Students demonstrate comprehension both written and orally on workbooks, classroom discussions, and partner work.
Language class teaches the students the D'Nealian cursive alphabet and guides them into using it on all daily work. We review all four types of sentences and correct sentence structure. We focus on grammar, double paragraphs, poetry, and writing our own Pop-up books. Students are taught to pre-write, draft, revise, and edit for accuracy.
Spelling work includes weekly workbook pages, a pre-test on Wednesday, and final test on Friday. It is expected that third grade students begin to apply correct spelling on daily work.
